Mathematics Curriculum Overview
Building Confident Problem Solvers for the Real World
At Evergreen Primary School, our Mathematics curriculum is closely aligned with the MOE 2021 syllabus and is designed to nurture confident, logical, and adaptable problem solvers.
From Primary 1 to Primary 6, students experience a progressively structured programme that:
-
Strengthens foundational numeracy
-
Builds fluency in mathematical operations
-
Deepens conceptual understanding through real-world applications
We engage students through a variety of differentiated learning experiences and teaching approaches, including:
-
Activity-based learning
-
Inquiry-based exploration
-
Direct instruction, enhanced with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools
Developing 21st Century Competencies
Our Mathematics programme also supports the development of 21st Century Competencies (21CC) such as:
-
Critical and inventive thinking
-
Collaborative problem-solving
-
Effective mathematical communication
Students are encouraged to:
-
Explore multiple strategies
-
Ask meaningful questions
-
Reflect on their learning
-
Tackle challenges with confidence and perseverance
Through these experiences, our students grow into resilient thinkers who can reason logically and solve problems creatively—skills essential for success in school and beyond.

Key Mathematics Programmes
Inspiring Joy, Building Confidence, and Stretching Potential
TGIF: Generating Interest in Mathematics
The TGIF Programme is designed to spark curiosity and enhance students’ enjoyment of Mathematics by offering meaningful opportunities to explore the subject beyond the classroom.
In collaboration with the Science Department, TGIF features a series of hands-on activities that integrate both Mathematics and Science concepts. Through games, puzzles, and interactive tasks, students engage in creative exploration, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving in a fun and stimulating environment.
Beyond academic enrichment, TGIF also supports social-emotional learning (SEL). As students work and play together, they strengthen their communication, collaboration, and decision-making skills—building confidence and resilience along the way.
TGIF is more than just a programme; it’s a joyful, collaborative space where learning is active, meaningful, and fun.
LSM: Providing Support in Learning Mathematics
At Evergreen Primary School, we believe that every child can learn Mathematics when given the right support and opportunities.
The Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM) Programme is an early intervention initiative for Primary 1 to Primary 4 students who need additional help in developing foundational mathematical concepts and skills. It also aims to nurture resilience and confidence, empowering students to persevere and succeed in their learning journey.
Students in the LSM programme learn in small groups, guided by specially trained teachers who use strategies grounded in the Singapore Teaching Practice (STP) and ICAN principles. This supportive environment promotes both academic progress and emotional growth.
The LSM programme plays a vital role in ensuring that every learner builds a strong mathematical foundation and is given the opportunity to thrive.
Stretch Programmes: Empowering Learners to Thrive and Excel
We recognise that students learn at different paces and have diverse strengths. Our tiered stretch programme nurtures students at various readiness levels, helping them grow into confident and competent problem solvers.
Tier 1: Building Strong Foundations with Heuristic Skills
All students are introduced to a variety of heuristic strategies throughout their six years at Evergreen. Using the STAR approach—Study the problem, Think of a plan, Act on it, Reflect on the solution—students develop strong conceptual understanding and confidence in tackling mathematical tasks.
Tier 2: E2K Mathematics – Inquiry and Exploration
Selected Primary 3 to Primary 5 students participate in the E2K Mathematics Programme, which deepens mathematical reasoning through inquiry-based learning. Students engage in puzzles, games, and open-ended tasks that promote curiosity, creativity, and collaborative thinking.
Tier 3: Olympiad Training and Mathematics Competitions
High-progress learners from Primary 4 to Primary 6 are invited to join Olympiad training and competitions, where they tackle complex, non-routine problems and advanced mathematical concepts. Through specialised coaching and exposure to competitions, students sharpen their higher-order thinking skills and develop a positive mindset toward challenging tasks.
Through this structured and progressive approach, we empower every learner to discover their strengths, deepen their curiosity, and stretch their mathematical abilities.
